Driftwood Inn

290 S Lb Brown Ave
Bartow, FL

The Driftwood Lodge was originally conceived by Bill and Joyce Mundy of St. Louis, Missouri. Joyce Mundy designed the first buildings in 1954, consisting of a main lodge with living quarters for the Mundy family, as well as a 12-unit motel. By 1958, the Mundys had decided to expand, adding four additional motel units, increasing the front desk area and adding a restaurant. During the expansion, Bill Mundy was offered and accepted a position that would take the family to the Midwest. The Driftwood Lodge was suddenly for sale.

Austen and Helen Excell, long-time residents of Springdale, purchased the Lodge in May of 1959. As the Driftwood’s popularity grew and visitation to Zion National Park increased, the Excells expanded their lodging. They added four more motel units near the Virgin River and another building in 1978 which housed seven rooms. In 1991, they added a two-story building with nineteen rooms. This building, with its tall open gables, its rough-hewn timbers and its natural colors, defines the Driftwood Lodge today and it has been emulated by subsequent lodging in the Zion Canyon area. In 2003, the new suites were built, offering spacious accommodations and fantastic canyon views.

Driftwood Lodge amenities at Zion National Park
By 2006, the Excell family had decided to retire from the hospitality business. At the time of its sale in May 2006, the new owners, Hans and Christina Dunzinger, took over with a commitment to continue the nearly 50-year tradition of hospitality and service.

Hans and Christina bring more than 30 years of Austrian hospitality tradition. Hans studied Hotel and Restaurant Management in Innsbruck, Austria and acquired experience working for several hotels and restaurants in Austria, Germany and Argentina. Until 2008, they were partners in another lodge, the Hotel Tirol in the famous ski resort of Bariloche, Argentina. Christina, an accomplished artist and interior designer, whose decorating abilities were vital in the transformation of the main building, as well as the Lodge's rooms, continues to be an integral part of the ongoing improvements. Peter Stempel, a local architect and a contributing teacher at the Delaware School of Design, helped the Dunzingers bring to life their vision of the new Driftwood Lodge.

During the 2007/2008 winter season, Hans and Christina once again made major renovations with improvements to the suites and the front entrance to the Lodge. New furnishings and other comfortable amenities for the suites include flat-screen televisions in both the bedroom and new sitting area. Our guests' lodging experience will be further enhanced by the incredible views of the Canyon, either from inside the rooms or comfortably seated in the Adirondack chairs on the patios and balconies. The inviting new entrance to the Lodge, landscaped with native Southwestern species, includes a new terrace with a breathtaking view of the West Temple, perfect for dining! Our extensive lawns and old Cottonwoods along the river create a serene and relaxing world after a strenuous day in Zion. To further accommodate our guests, the shuttle bus to Zion National Park stops at the Lodge throughout the day during the summer season.

Luxury accomodations at Zion National Park
During the 2008/2009 winter season, Hans and Christina made renovations to the Narrows Building, updating all of the bathrooms and adding all new furnishings to the rooms.

During the 2009/2010 winter season, Hans and Christina renovated the West Temple Building, changing the room configurations to make the bathrooms bigger and to enclose the amenities areas. They added glass back doors and windows, replaced the carpets, added new furnishings, larger fridges, microwaves and flat-screen televisions. The Angel's Landing Building was updated with new counter tops and prototypes of new bathrooms and closets. A building housing the ice machine and new guest laundry was constructed in a centralized location near the pool.

In October of 2010, Hans and Christina installed solar panels to heat the water in the West Temple and Watchman Buildings. With this improvement all rooms at the Lodge will have water heated by solar energy.

During the 2010/2011 winter season, the Angel's Landing Building underwent construction to remodel all of the bathrooms in the building as well as adding closets, larger refrigerators and adding a microwave to each room. The Narrows Building was also renovated with the installation of new insulated walls, new bathrooms with granite countertops, new closets, and amenity areas. Refrigerators and microwaves were added to the rooms in the Narrows Building as well.

In 2011, a new concrete driveway and more parking spaces were added. Concurrently, an unnecessary driveway was removed in order to add more green space to the grounds and to assist in redirecting traffic. The pool and hot tub were replastered and retiled and 24/7 water monitoring systems were added to both the pool and the hot tub. In 2011, Hans and Christina began construction of two new buildings to house 10 new guest rooms near the Virgin River.

In 2012, construction of the 10 new Signature rooms located in the Court of the Patriarchs Buildings was completed. The grounds and landscaping were enhanced with the planting of over 35 trees and over 180 shrubs. New winding pathways leading to the guest laundry and pool area were added. State-of-the-art contact locks were installed on all of the guest room doors at the Lodge.

It is the wish of Hans and Christina Dunzinger to make every visit to the Driftwood Lodge a wonderful experience for their guests.

Paces Cottages

321 Riverside Dr
Steinhatchee, FL

Steinhatchee, Florida has always been a fisherman’s paradise. The mouth of the Steinhatchee River, called Deadman’s Bay since the 1830′s, was the home to thousands of Native Americans. Early explorers wrote of large mounds of oyster and mussel shells along the banks of the Steinhatchee River. Early settlers told friends and relatives in far off places about the plentiful supply of fish and wild game found in the Steinhatchee area
The Steinhatchee River is one of several rivers that empty into Apalachee Bay of the Gulf of Mexico along Florida’s Big Bend. For thousands of years the Suwannee, Wacissa, Econfina, Steinhatchee, Fenholloway and St. Marks rivers have deposited soils rich in minerals and foodstuffs into Apalachee Bay. These deposits have formed one of the richest and most productive eco-systems in the world. The slope of the Gulf bottom is very gradual making the water shallow for vast distances. The mean tidal range of approximately three feet means there is always shallow water for great fishing. The fertile grass flats support a variety of species of fish, including shellfish, making this part of Florida an incredibly exciting fishing ground.

Most anglers choose saltwater species but area rivers and countless creeks provide an abundant supply of freshwater fishing. Offshore fishing for grouper, snapper and sheepshead is popular along Taylor County’s 60-mile coastline. In addition to rock-based natural reefs in waters from 25 to 65 feet deep, there are three artificial reefs 10 miles offshore from Steinhatchee. Regardless of the season, fishing can be great fun in Taylor County. Here is what you can expect.
SPRING (April, May, and June) offers some fantastic fishing in the Steinhatchee area. As the water warms on the grass flats of Deadman’s Bay, fish such as spotted seatrout, redfish, bluefish, Spanish mackerel, ladyfish, and jack crevalle, can easily be caught in shallow beach, inshore, brackish river, or backcountry waters. Anyone with a small boat can reach prime fish country easily and safely from the Steinhatchee River. Live baits such as shrimp and pinfish will readily seduce these fish as will a wide array of artificials including topwater plugs, crankbaits, spoons, spinnerbaits, jigs, and a variety of soft plastic grubs. On the Steinhatchee Reef (29° 39.90′N 83° 37.59′W) follow the jumping schools of baitfish as well as the seagulls to locate Spanish mackerel, bluefish, trout, and other aggressive fish. Hiring one of the Sea Hag Guides for your first trip might be a good idea. Of course, the Sea Hag Marina’s Ship’s Store is a great place to learn about the latest ‘hot spots’ and purchase the latest ‘hot’ baits.
Spring also offers some fantastic fishing offshore. grouper, black seabass, and red and Florida snapper can be caught on the bottom in about 35-foot to 55 feet of water. Spring also brings a run on king mackerel. Every spring and fall the kingfish travel through Steinhatchee on their quest to stay in the perfect water temperature, approximately 72° F. Trolling rigged baits or large flashy lures will often bring a sizable hit. Some of the rigged baits include a tinsel duster on a blueback or ballyhoo or you can try trolling a chrome-colored Stretch 25+ lure.

SUMMER (July, August, and September)fishing includes a few more fish such as cobia, will often seek shelter from the hot sun by hiding in the shade of your boat. Tarpon often chase baitfish on the flats. You can also expect to catch flounder, shark, and of course, trout and redfish.
Summer is SCALLOPING TIME in Steinhatchee. In fact, Steinhatchee is the top places in the United States for catching bay scallops. The season is open from July 1st to September 10th. Scallops are very easy to catch! The only equipment you need is a mask, snorkel, fins, and a mesh bag to hold the scallops. Other equipment that can be of help is a dip net, a five-gallon bucket and lots of sunscreen. Scallops seem to prefer areas of bottom covered by the thin, round bladed type of sea grass more than the flat, broad-bladed turtle grass. Patches of brown algae are also favorite hiding places. Once a few scallops are seen lying on top of the sea grasses, drop the anchor, put up a dive flag and start collecting. It’s easy, fun, and can enjoyed by all ages.
FALL (October, November, and December) brings another awesome run of fish. Expect the spotted seatrout, redfish, bluefish, and Spanish mackerel to congregate on the flats. Offshore grouper will pick up along with black seabass, red snapper and another kingfish run. As the water temperature grows cold around October and November, the large spotted (gator) seatrout will flood the Steinhatchee River. To be present and to participate in this phenomenon can be the fishing experience of a lifetime. Steinhatchee is also a great place to learn salt-water fly fishing techniques from local fly fishing guides with years of experience.
WINTER (January, February, and March) brings even more awesome grouper fishing. Our coastline is loaded with ledges located approximately 25 miles out from the Steinhatchee River mouth. Many other fantastic grouper ‘bottoms’ can be found by trolling in the same general area and reading your bottom machine. Optimally, trolling several Mann’s Stretch 30+ lures covers the most area and tends to land the largest of groupers. Due to spawning activities, Grouper can be caught in close to the shore (approximately 8 to 10 miles out) and can even be caught on the flats. The Steinhatchee Reef also becomes the home for Sheepshead, a tasty little fighter that can measure up to ten pounds.
